30 Days Later

Sunday, October 25, 2009

Saturday was our sebulan anniversary..So that day, we did what we like most, stay at home during the day. I woke up and wished him Happy Anniversary while he rushed and insisted that he needed to go to the minimart nearby. I found that weird, as there's a kedai runcit downstairs.
When he came back 30 mints later, he told me that he couldnt find a nice cake from the two bakeries there . So I said, what cake, coz I didnt remember kirim any cake. And he said - cake for our anniversary! Wasn't my Khalis sweet??
I cooked mee gemok for brunch. Khalis said he's been waiting for my mee gemok since before kawen and after kawen, he had to wait for a month plak before dapat. Khalis said that my mee gemok was really good, like reallyy good. I think anything would taste great if you're being generous. I put lotsa chicken, udang, tauhu goreng and few types of vege.
But really, there's nothing I like more than buang masa with my husband, doing nothing, enjoying each other nyer company.

At night, we went out. Since 2 weeks ago, my Cardiff housemates had already planned for dinner together2, coz Charlene came all the way from Kuching for our snr nyer wedding in KL. So we drove to this place recommended by Massy, Subak, at 600pm. It was really hard to find, we were in the area at 615, but kol 7 baru sampai Subak after dah sesat2..It was a really nice place and really worth the trouble. They had a big kolam in the middle and put tables around it. And they had nothing nearby, hutan je..The restaurant was quite big, but they had less than 30 tables. So, 8 (Me, Khalis, Massy, Umi, Charlene, Lindat, Shahied, and Gill) of us were there..Only Khalis and I were from the corporate world, the rest sume pharmacists (and Lindat's bf - a doctor).
We had Mango Smoozer (Sedap gilerrr!!!), Strawberry Smoozer, Soto sbg appetizer (Best soto I've ever had!!), Wantan noodle (so-so je), mi siam (also so-so je) and es teler (sedap gak)
I sooo miss my ex-housemates!If I was still single, I would've joined diorg nyer karo-k session later at Massy's place!

We were reading our books last night. Khalis tiba2 asked me
"Was it Cafe 13?"
Immediately I knew which Cafe he's talking about
"No lah, its Cafe 37"
"Oh, 37 ke.."
"Do you remember the baguet shop?"
"Yes"
"Whats the name ek?"
"Hmmm..x ingat lah.."
"Do you still remember how to get there?"
"Mestilah.."
"And the weather?"
"Ha ah.."
Paused sekejap ingat kenangan lama....
"You know, probably, kalau kita pegi Cardiff balik, that shop dah no longer exists.."

That baguet shop was our favourite brunch place. Everything was cheap and the portion pn generous. There's no way I would remember the name of the kedai..except, I wrote about in once, kat blog eih..
Yes sayang, kedai tuh namanyer Tiffin Deli!

Ok, I should write a lil bit about our fav kebab shop, just in case..
For me (and Khalis too), Chicago Bull nyer kebab was the best..It was the best in Cardiff and no kebab in Coventry, Birmingham and London bleh lawan (I hadnt tried kebabs at other places)..But we always tried kebab kat other European countries that we went, and we still found Chicago Bull nyer plg best.. My fav there was Chicken Shish (with mayo, garlic sauce and chilli sauce - the kedai assistant once said to me 'good combination!')I was a regular and everytime I went there, they knew that I would order Chicken Shish. Khalis plak tak kesah, mana2 kebab pn bleh..

Mkn Lamb

Friday, October 16, 2009

My sisters were in town last night. So Khalis and I decided that we should bring them makan2..We were torn between Al Rawsha and Sakae..but in the end Al Rawsha won coz
1)For Sakae, We would have to go to KLCC and Khalis was not so sure about the jam
2)Sakae is everywhere and reachable by public transport. So my sisters bleh pegi bila2 masa je
3)We just went to Sakae just few days ago
4)Lamb nyer sangat sedap
5)We were not sure if they're into Japanese nyer food
Few days before, Khalis dah stat komplen about how jam its gonna be. But, x jam lansung..And for the first time ever, I showed him the direction!sgt yes ok.
I think it took us like 10 mints to get there.

Al Rawsha is so famous I dont think I need to introduce the place further.
We saw so many cars dkat Al Rawsha and stat cuak2 kot2 takde tables available. But when we got in, byk lagi ade tmpat..they had like more than 60 tables, so ok la..
I just noticed that they only put like 10 tables in the non-smoking section..org2 arab eih sure suka isap rokok..
Khalis and I made up our mind long2 time ago and we dgn pantasnyer ordered sedulang lamb madghut. and our favourite mango lassi.
My sisters took quite some time to decide. But in the end they ordered Chicken Kebab and Istanbul Kebab.
Our order arrived quite fast, the drinks first, then rice and finally the kebabs.
I was actually shocked to see the size of the dulang.the 4 of us ate the rice first, and we all loved it! mkn sampai kenyang and we couldnt finish it.
When my sisters' nyer kebab arrived, lagi la diorg x bleh abeskan..so some of the kebabs kitorg tapau lah..
My sisters said the lamb madghut tuh sedap, better than their kebabs.
I ate so much lamb last night, I dont think I could eat lamb for the next 2 weeks.

I only started eating red meat like 4 years ago, during my first ramadhan in the UK. We went to the mosque every iftar for free food and they alternated between chicken, lamb and beef. The reason I could take lamb and beef was bcoz there's no smell at all.
Balik Malaysia, now I mkn red meat, but selectively. goreng2 definitely kenot.and lamb, if its not cooked by org2 arab, sorrrrryyyyyy..

Biz Trips

I almost went crazy on Tuesday (I'm kiddin ppl, Of course I did not)..In the afternoon Khalis said he's going to Labuan for 9 days next month.9 bloody days!! So I checked MAS and Airasia websites right away..I planned to spent the weekend in Labuan, regardless of how boring Labuan is. I would have proceeded with booking, but Khalis wasn't sure with the dates or whether his big boss has signed whatever letters necessary.

But I got a good news just now. I was just informed that the team is going to Kedah sometime during the period he's gone. and Sarawak later. The dates and number of ppl going are not finalise yet.. So tunggu je lah..I might be going. or I might not. Urggghhhh..

Changes

Monday, October 12, 2009

Now that we're living together, I notice these few changes
1: That instead of daily, I now charge my phone every other day.
2: That I now go to bed an hour earlier, mirroring Khalis
3: That I now eat twice the usual amount. Peer pressure!
4: That Khalis needs to have me within his eyesight. and if I'm not, he'll start calling me and tell me to e.g. watch tv with him. Less me-time for me.
5: That I wake up 30 mints earlier, shortly after he does
6: That my priority now is to finish my work quickly and go home early
7: Now that its no longer him, it takes me quite some time to reply sms and return calls (Shit! that reminds me,haven't replied to my cuz's sms! *reaching out for the phone*)

More changes in lifestyle coming? My crystal ball says Yes..

This is my response to Syaz. It took me sooo long coz I was on holiday for 3 weeks (Today's my first day after the break) and I didn’t want to do anything that’s work-related.

An interviewer (this guy’s quite famous, sometimes kuar paper) once told me – "Your degree only means that you are capable to learn. What you’re learning now is just the tip of the iceberg. You will only start learning when you start working". This statement was echoed by one of the bosses here – "that a degree is just a signal to the employers that you’re capable of achieving/meeting some standards/levels".

I strongly agree that you only start doing+learning the real thing only when you start working. While in Uni, u learn that A+B=C, but you’ll find out later that there are so many combinations that could make A and B. So your concern then would no longer be A+B=C, but rather what is A or B. That being said, for certain fields, you need to have some basic knowledge (like the very basic equation of A+B=C) on what they’re all about before you can actually get into them. Like engineering, or dentistry, or law. Other jobs, like in sales, or customer services, might not require a specific degree, but you need to have THE personality. However, I do think that, a good accountant (like a really smart one) would have no problem becoming an engineer with proper training and guidance from the snrs – its just that the time involved to make him/her a good one would deter any firms from actually doing this.

However, for our dept, for the positions that we’re offering, we don’t care about what you did in uni coz what you’re gonna do is not taught in classes. We do a lot of research here and research is not something that you can just sit and learn. You learn by doing and use your own creativity to put together pieces of info you get from everywhere. Lotsa reading is required, but spotting what’s relevant is a skill – and some ppl would spot more things than the others (or quicker). There will be simple formulas to help you with the analysis. But how the analysis itself is done will depend on your own style – with guidance from bosses and colleagues of course - as different ppl would have different things/angles that they think should be highlighted. At the beginning, it would be harder for, say, engineers (I love using engineers as an example for the very reason I had highlighted in the previous post), but there’s always internet to help you with the definitions and before actually doing the job, you’ll undergo in-house training on Corp finance. You’ll also be equipped with few thick books on corp finance. And there will be a whole team of ppl yg x kedekut ilmu to help you. And here, attitude matters. Another boss said to me - If you have THE attitude, you're half-way there already

The dept is made of few teams and the research team is just one them. But it doesn’t mean that the research team only does research. There are many other exciting things too. I only talk about what we do in general here. As for the details - ONLY for those interested. I cannot say anything specific without some sort of clearance from my boss and I do understand if you find what we do boring (based on the para above). It doesn’t tell you much, really.

And if I may add something - If you wanna work with a team of high-flyers, then this is the place to be. (I am not one, I'm just average)...And it scares me, everytime, just thinking about how smart (hardworking plak tu!!) everyone else is.

Have I actually answered Syaz's nyer soklan? I dont know la..huhuhuh..

The Firsts: Grocery Shopping and Home-cooked meal

Tuesday, October 06, 2009

We went shopping for groceries together for the first time today..There were so many things to buy but we ended up buying hardly half of the items in the list..We arrived at Carrefour at 345pm and were determined to finish it by 500pm - didn't want to be trapped in the horror KL traffic. I was actually shocked to see the bill - RM185 for 41 items..Man, things in KL sure are expensive..Or maybe I havent gotten used to it..The last time I went to Tesco for groceries was when I was still in the UK and we could penuhkan the whole trolley for 50 quids. And this time its really just 1/3 of the trolley... Before we're married, we always went to the fish and rice sections, imagining how fun its gonna be pilih2 ikan and beras together..And we did it today and it was really fun..
Sometimes ppl find happiness in unexpected places..Like supermarket aisles...

So now that we had the basics, we could start cooking our own meals. Which I did just now for dinner. There were limited options available, utk warm-up my cooking skills (Oh yes, I had not cooked, not even once sejak balik dr Cardiff - which meant, a year and 2 months today) I cooked ikan sardin and telur goreng (hehhehehe)..OK, they're both the easiest things to prepare, but the cleaning up I had to do - bykgileanddidntjustifythefoodwesawonthetable..

While devouring our food,
Khalis said - Your ikan sardin's really good
I said - So this is the best sardin you've ever had?
And he answered - YES
OK, its just masak sardin (although I do have a secret recipe for sardin..<<--statement x bleh blah..hahaha)..but he just made my day..=))
The cost of the meal - just RM7.50 for two!Amazing!
